An off-duty police officer with Montgomery County was injured while helping at the scene of an accident in Germantown on Tuesday, October 2.
A disabled bus had spilled oil on the ramp from eastbound Route 118 to southbound Interstate 270, creating extremely slick conditions on an already wet, rainy day.
Officer Fabio Chung was on the scene attempting to help the victims of an earlier crash when another vehicle slid on the slippery roadway and struck both Chung and his vehicle shortly after 5:00 p.m. Chung was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Montgomery County Police responded to scenes of subsequent car accidents due to the slick road conditions. Chung was the only one reported as injured on the scene.
A second car accident in Montgomery County, this time in Derwood, left one person dead just five days later, on Sunday, October 7.
According to Montgomery County Police, the driver of a silver 2000 Mazda 626 was driving northbound along Airpark Road about 10:30 a.m. For reasons unknown, the driver drifted into the southbound lanes while trying to negotiate a curve along a portion of the road.
The Mazda crashed into oncoming traffic, hitting both a white 2010 Lexus and a gray 2012 Acura.
The front-seat passenger in the Mazda, a 53-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of both the Mazda and Acura were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The third driver was uninjured.
County police are still investigating the cause of the accident and have not yet released the names of any of those involved.
