Two Maryland car accidents ended in fatalities on Friday, Sept. 9.

A four-vehicle crash in Charles County killed two people and injured six others Friday morning.

Evelyn Sommer, 67, and Franz Sommer, 83, were in their car waiting to turn left on Dicandia Dorsey Place off eastbound Route 231 in Benedict around 11:30 a.m.

A truck rear-ended their car, pushing them into oncoming traffic where two other vehicles also hit their car. Both Sommers died in the accident.

Four others, including two infant children, were injured. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.

Police closed the road and nearby Patuxent River Bridge for five hours to investigate the crash. So far, no charges have been filed.

That same evening, a Delaware woman died in a crash in Queen Anne's County.

Maryland State Trooper First Class Travis Nelson, 24, was on his way to the scene of a burglary around 9 p.m. He had just turned off Route 50 onto an access ramp to westbound Shopping Center Drive in Stevensville when he hit a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation shows that 29-year-old Iraina J. Curtis of Dover, Del., was in the road at the time of the accident. According to a friend who was with her, she had been sitting on a wall along the side of the road waiting for a ride when she moved away to make a phone call.

Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation. It is unknown how fast the police car was going, but police say the emergency lights and sirens were not in use at the time of the accident.

The attorneys at Nickelsporn and Lundin offer our deepest condolences to the families of the Sommers and Curtis.
