A Pennsylvania man who was driving the wrong way on a local Maryland highway died in the early morning hours of Oct. 23.

Eugene R. Kantner, 40, was traveling the wrong way on northbound U.S. Route 301 (Crain Highway) near Fairgrounds Road in La Plata, Charles County.

The accident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. when Kantner's 1993 Isuzu Trooper collided head-on with a 2007 Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the Corolla, Randy Jerve Datcher, 34, attempted unsuccessfully to avoid the crash. As he swerved into an adjacent lane, he side-swiped a 2010 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that was traveling next to him.

Kantner, a resident of Hazle Township, Pa., was taken to Civista Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Datcher and his passenger, 32-year-old Shannelle Angela Marshall, were taken to Baltimore's Cowley Shock Trauma Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The 40-year-old truck driver, Roosevelt Raines, Jr., was uninjured.

Maryland State Police are still investigating the accident.
