A Philippines native died February 25, 2014, when a Ride On bus struck and killed her near the Rockville Metro station. Montgomery County police are still investigating the accident and are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward. A preliminary investigation suggests the accident occurred as follows:

Anicia Carnigal Castillo, 62-years-old, was walking near the intersection of Park Road and North Stone Street shortly after 7:00 p.m. that Tuesday. The driver of a Ride On metro bus was waiting for traffic to pass on Park Road before making a left-hand turn from Park Road to North Stone Street into the bus stop entrance. As the driver—whose name has not been released—made the turn, the bus struck Castillo.

Castillo, who was at the station to meet her husband, was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries. The Philippines native moved to the U.S. several years ago, working as a housekeeper to raise her two children, now 22 and 18. She lived in Falls Church, Virginia.

A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Police Reconstruction Unit said that it’s too early to tell whether Castillo was in fact in the crosswalk or just near it. The complete accident investigation is likely to take weeks. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to come forward. In particular, they believe that there were two passengers on board the bus who left before giving a statement. At this point no charges have been filed in the Rockville bus crash, and speed is not suspected to be a factor.

We express our sympathies to the family of Mrs. Castillo in their time of grief.
