A Maryland man died Oct. 7 in a car accident when he became momentarily distracted from the road.

John Leonard Lonigan, 20, was driving eastbound on Bay Front Road in Deale while trying to program the GPS in his 2001 Chevrolet Impala at around 6:30 in the morning. He was going about 10 miles over the posted speed limit of 50 mph.

According to Anne Arundel County police, Lonigan became distracted and veered into westbound traffic near Nutwell Sudley Road.

Donald August Applekamp Jr., 55, was driving a 2009 Ford F150 in the westbound lane when he saw the other vehicle approaching. He attempted to move over to the shoulder to avoid the collision, but Lonigan's car hit the truck head-on.

Both men had to be extracted from their vehicles. Lonigan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Applekamp was taken to Prince George's Shock Trauma Center with serious injuries.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Lonigan was a resident of Deale.
