A Prince George's County man died Aug. 12 when his motorcycle crashed along Route 5 in St. Mary's County.

Devin L. Sweeting, 25 years old and a resident of Bowie, was driving along southbound Route 5 near Thompson Orchard Lane in Park Hall about 2 p.m. when the accident happened.

For reasons unknown, Sweeting's 2006 Yamaha R1 motorcycle left the roadway and slammed into a cement culvert on the side of the road.

The motorcycle fell onto its side and slid nearly 170 feet, with Sweeting still on the bike. It finally stopped, ramming into a utility pole on the side of the road.

Sweeting was rushed to Baltimore Shock Trauma by helicopter, but he was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m. The cause of death was fatal injuries from the crash.

Maryland State Police do not know why Sweeting veered off the road. They have said that speeding might have been a factor in the accident.

Sweeting was apparently returning to St. Inigoes Coast Guard station after a lunch break when the accident occurred. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard for seven years and had recently moved to the reserves.

The attorneys at Nickelsporn & Lundin offer our condolences to the family of Devin Sweeting.
