An elderly woman died following a head-on car crash on Sunday, June 19. Another person was seriously injured.

The accident happened just after 4:30 p.m. in Frederick, Md.

Susan Baumgardner, a resident of Taneytown, was driving a 2003 Ford Focus along State Highway 194. Nellie R. Baumgardner, also of Taneytown, was a passenger in the vehicle.

According to police reports, Susan Baumgardner apparently crossed a double yellow line near the Legore Road intersection. There she collided head-on with Katlyn Appler of Hanover, Penn., who was driving a 1989 Toyota Corolla.

Nellie R. Baumgardner was rushed to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet determined whether she died from injuries sustained in the car crash or from another cause. They say she may have been suffering from a medical condition just prior to the accident. Nellie R. Baumgardner was 86 years old.

Susan Baumgardner was taken by helicopter to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. She was being treated for serious injuries from the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle, Appler, was taken to Meritus Medical Center in Washington County where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
