Tip #1: Competence.

First, choose a lawyer that has the legal knowledge and skill necessary to take you through the kind of legal process you're facing. Different lawyers handle different kinds of matters...so don't hire a family friend who's a real estate lawyer to handle a drunk driving or personal injury case.

Second, look for a lawyer who will minimize the drain on your time, money and emotions. Litigation can be very "expensive" in all three areas.

Third, be sure your lawyer has the time to prepare your case so that you don't lose any rights or money that you deserve. Find a lawyer who follows the 5 P's: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

Fourth, choose a lawyer who will take time to listen to you to understand your objectives, before going to court or negotiating with the other side.
