Two people died in unrelated car accidents the same night in Prince George’s County. The evening of Wednesday, March 5, 2014, was a deadly one for two local drivers. Details of both fatal Maryland car accidents are as follows:

The first accident happened in Laurel around 9:00 p.m. A car traveling westbound along Contee Road collided head-on with a vehicle traveling eastbound on the same road. The impact of the crash caused one of the drivers to be ejected from a vehicle while the other driver was trapped inside her vehicle.

The male driver was identified as Maurice Michael Barnes, a 32-year-old man from Laurel. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The female driver, whose name has not yet been released, was treated for injuries that were serious but not considered to be life-threatening. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

According to a preliminary police report, it appears that Barnes was responsible for the crash. The investigation is ongoing, but speed appears to have been a factor in the fatal crash.

The second accident occurred around 11:00 p.m. in Brentwood. James Kevin Green, a 54-year-old man from Washington, D.C., was traveling westbound along 38th Street. As he approached the intersection for Rhode Island Avenue, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a pole on the side of the road. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. No other passengers were in the vehicle with him. Police are still trying to determine what exactly caused Green to lose control of his vehicle. They believe speed may have been a factor in the single-vehicle crash.

We express our condolences to the families of the victims involved in these two crashes.
